Since Ryuk has kept up his side of the bargain and found all of the cameras and made sure Light isn't being followed - Light purchases him some apples to curb the withdrawal symptoms. Ryuk grumbles about being made to work for the apples, but eats them anyway.
L still believes that someone at one of the surveilled households is guilty, but that they don't appear to be suspicious on camera. He announces he'll take down the surveillance, but is not done investigating the houses. To him this means that Kira's psyche is obviously delusional, judging people without any reaction. L realizes he needs a new trap and stops to think for a while.
Ryuk confirms to Light that all of the cameras and wiretaps are gone. Light decides to come up with a new plan as well, and go directly after L by using his father. Light goes to take his entrance exam, and he sees L there - sees him, sitting two seats apart from each other. They both score 100% and are chosen to do the address together at the college entrance ceremony. After the ceremony, L reveals his identity to Light. Light chooses not to react out of hand, and calmly expresses his respect for the investigator. When he gets home, even though his family is happy for his entrance to university, he loses control and is furious at L for revealing himself. He then realizes that there's no evidence and that it's come down to a battle of wits.
The Shinigami, still gambling, are gossiping about Ryuk, laughing at him for becoming a human's pet.
