Death Note Episode 10: Doubt
This episode begins with Ryuzaki (L) and Light (Kira) playing a game of tennis. Neither of them knows the other's true identity, and each one hopes something will slip out. Despite the intense match, nothing is revealed. Ryuzaki accuses Light of being Kira, but if he isn't, he'll let Light work on the investigation.
Afterwards, Ryu and Light go to a coffee shop. Ryuzaki tests Light by having him look at photos of three notes, each written by an inmate under Kira's control. Light finds a message formed by the first letter of each line: "L, do you know gods of death who love apples?" Ryu reveals another photo, adding "have red hands?" Light, who is Kira, knows this last note is a forgery. Light sees a problem with working on the case: the better a detective he is, the more suspicion he will draw.
Light wants Ryuzaki to be identified by someone at police headquarters. Ryuzaki tells him he's working alongside Light's father. Both receive phone calls: Light's father, Soichiro, had a heart attack. Has Kira struck again?
Ryu and Light go to the hospital. The heart attack was caused by stress, not Kira. Soichiro confirms Ryu is L.
Ryu reviews the case for Light, mentioning one victim, Ray Pember, acted oddly before dying; Pember was investigating Light at the time.
Light and Soichiro argue over whether he should investigate or go back to school. Light reminds him that he'd promised if anything happened to his dad, he would make sure Kira was executed. Dad insists killing is a curse regardless of circumstances. If Kira is a normal person who came upon this power, maybe he's cursed.
Light makes a proposal to L: What if he was locked up for a month with no access to the outside world, and was watched constantly? L says he can't deprive him of human rights, nor should he take suggestions from a suspect. He asks Light to concentrate on caring for his father for the time being.
Once L leaves, Light talks to Ryuk. He says he doesn't feel cursed, as he thinks the deaths make the world better. Ryuk doesn't care, but notes that humans that come in contact with the notebook often suffer misfortune.
Meanwhile, reporters are having a meeting, with their manager wanting a better story on Kira: "If it bleeds, it leads." The reporters that the police won't talk. He is elated when a package arrives from Kira with the message, "If you do not broadcast these tapes, I will execute the board of directors one by one."
