Death Note Ep. 20 : Makeshift
Episode 20 begins as the investigation team's effort to bug and infiltrate the Yotsuba Company's board meeting pays off. Having already discovered that even the Yotsuba groups members aren't safe, The board meeting's members have failed to take into account that they might be bugged and brazenly discuss murder's they've committed. The team is ready to move, but finds resistance from a sugar cube guzzling L who insists they wait until the names Yotsuba members tick off are killed so they can have concrete evidence of their involvement with Kira.
In an ironic move, Light helps plan a fake-out on the Yotsuba Group's board by planning with Light to call the supposed head of the Yotsuba, Namikawa, alerting him to the fact that he's being watched in the hopes that he'll give them evidence leading to Kira. Under threat of prison time, they give Namikawa an ultimatum: delay the next death or suffer the legal consequences when the investigation is complete. Namikawa manages to convince the board members to hold off on any more death note killings and instead focus on finding L instead.
L is impressed with Light's quick thinking, mentioning that Light's plan was similar to something he himself would devise. With the stakes rising by the hour, L requests that Light take over as the L persona if L is killed. L think to himself that if Light were really Kira, he would immediately accept. Light accurately gauges L's thoughts and proceeds to explain that L believes he might be Kira or have passed the powers own and lost memory of the incident. Since both of these theories are true, Light has inadvertently explained his MO to the investigation team.
Light asks L if he really thinks he looks like someone who could commit a murder, to which L simply replies "yes." This leads to a fistfight that is quickly broken up. The team still insists they arrest the Yotsubas and L announces that they can do as they wish and he will hunt Kira on his own.
Back in their room, L manipulates Misa into playing double agent for the investigation team. By working with the Yotsuba group and dropping hints that she knows the true identity of L, they plan to draw out the new Kira. Light objects under the pretense that he does not want Misa to come to any harm. Misa agrees and proclaims L her new friend. By involving Misa, L has guaranteed Light's continued participation in the investigation. As Misa continues to proclaim her love for Light, Soichiro is hard at work trying to figure out how to arrest seven powerful businessmen all at once.
