Death Note ep. 26: Renewal
After his death, L's superiors receive all of his data on the Kira case. This is used to review and recap the events of the last 25 episodes. Included are all relevant evidence linking Misa and Light to the Kira case as well as most of the major moments involving L. The review ends with a message from L saying that if they are receiving this, it means that he is no longer alive. Light is scene looking at it ominously at his desktop.
After Watari's death, the investigators realize that he was in reality a wealthy inventor who had founded orphanages all over the world. Unfortunately, they have received no such insights into L's background. Light has found a way to mimic L's voice so that they can remain in touch with the police with no interference. The team nominates Light to take L's place, who modestly demures. However, they insist and Light accepts the leadership position, under the condition that he not be required to do anything reckless like L.
Light wants a one room room apartment to use as the group's headquarters. His father agrees and the matter is settled. They decide to hide the notebook so none of them will ever be tempted to use it and nominate Soichiro to take care of it. Light then meets Misa in a cafe and asks her to move in with him. She quickly accepts and is proud of succeeding where the other women in Light's life had failed.
In the next scene, Light is on top of the HQ roof again, this time speaking with Kyuk. Kyuk seems disappointed that with L dead Light won't be interesting to observe anymore. However, Light tells him to stick around to witness the birth of a new world. With that, Light begins writing dozens of names into the death note. Among them are Wedy, every member of the Yotsuba group, and Aiber.
The show flashes forward to April of 2012. Light has joined the national police force and Kira is both a nightmare and a savior, with some countries even openly accepting Kira's influence. The episode ends with an old man being informed of L's death from a secret, timed transmission from L's computer.
